Say what you like about the lavish Nazi production, but extended sections of Gilliam’s version resemble the previous one sufficiently so as to render it a moving storyboard. A copyright suit brought on that basis might have some merit. No telling what scenes left unfilmed could have extended the consanguinity, either.

Not too get all ’secret’-y, but I suspect that Gilliam is an attractor for this kind of chronic misfortune. You just don’t create a film like Brazil and expect it to move through the study system un-mauled.

I think if you check the “Special Features” on Twelve Monkeys, you’ll find that Gilliam nearly died in a horse riding accident – which delayed filming.

Time Bandits, The Fisher King, and Twelve Monkeys went surprisingly without major incident, as far as my research uncovered. I guess even the losers get lucky sometime!

The “Tideland” disclaimer wasn’t just on the DVD – it was on the film in the theaters as well. Personally, I thought it took away from the film. Like comics say, don’t set a joke up, just tell it.

I have followed this man for a long time, thank you for the detail you put into the story. It saddens me to see him go though the stuff he has, and it makes me smile that he has never ceased trying.
